I live in Seattle and recieved a Magic Jack on last Wednesday. Ever since I installed the unit on my computer, a message saying "magicJack Service Unavailable".
Upon contacting the customer service "chat" line, I was informed that the service was down for maintenance for 24 to 48 hours. 48 hours later, the same message appeared and though there is a dial tone, there is no assigned phone number and still, no service.
I'm hoping that the "too good to be true" statement doesn't apply, but if there is no service by 5:00 PM on 4/1/08, a complaint will be filed with the AG's office.

Sorry to hear, I myself at the time don't have Magic Jack but should with in the week. People that I know that have it have not had a problem at all todate. I, myself will post what I think on the product as soon I get it and give it a try! Thank you for you comment and I hope it works out for you and does for me when I get my unit.

After a little over an hour with the magicJack chat line, the assistance given required a reformatting of my magicJack unit. Two upgrade downloads later, I was finally able to register and recieved a phone number for my unit. There is a delay now of up to two hours for registering with the local 911 service. I'll check back as soon as I get full service.

An hour with tech support, changes in security settings in my firewall, and attempts at downloading another firmware update from a website that was unavailable...but finally, I have a new phone number and service. The calls were crisp and clear and am now somewhat satisfied, though don't have local 911 service two days later.
The unit received may have been an older version, thus the neccesity for the firmware upgrades. Customer support ultimately solved the issues.

Nice blog. We were using Magic Jack for a week or so. Even when it was working, there was at least a 30-60 second delay on outgoing calls, as well as incoming... you answer the phone and hear nothing (on the callers end it is still ringing, even though you have picked up). Then it just stopped working altogether. Customer care does not really ‘care’. Check out this great site www.pissedconsumer.com for other complaints about the company.
